Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) establishes the location and extent of areas where explosive atmospheres may occur due to flammable gases, vapours or combustible dusts. The assessment follows applicable standards and industry guidance, including IEC 60079-10-1, IEC 60079-10-2, EI 15, API RP 505, API RP 500, NFPA 497 and NFPA 499, as appropriate to the project requirements. Process conditions, material properties, release sources and ventilation are reviewed to determine the basis for classification. Areas are assigned appropriate classifications using the agreed Zone or Division system. The extent of each classified area is presented on hazardous area classification drawings. These results support the selection and installation of suitable electrical equipment, with reference to IEC 60079-14 where applicable. A HAC report and associated drawings document the assessment basis and findings to support facility design, operation and maintenance.
